One of the greatest bass lines I've ever heard was from John Paul Jones. The first Led Zeppelin cd is filled with a great bass on the blues tracks. Also the BBC Sessions is great!

Here's one that is kinda in a defferent vein than the others (maybe that's what you want): look into "The New Deal" I suppose their self titled is a good start. They're synth, bass, and drums and do breakbeat/house stuff but very improv and I like them a lot. They're fairly local to me, but they tour the continent constantly. www.thenewdeal.ca might help.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

You guys rock! (Cheesy, but true.)

I've spent the past couple of weeks tracking down music from your recomendations and there's some excellent stuff our there. I still haven't found material from every band, but my favs so far are Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and Galactic.

BTW, I've been focusing on finding high-quality live recordings. If there are any tapers, traders, or fans of live music out there, check out furthurnet.org for access to a VAST network of live music available for download. I found five ARU shows through their file-swapping network! (The software is still in beta, but it's worked flawlessly under Mac OS X.)

P.S. Oteil is the man!

glad you dig jazz odyssey; those guys are crazy-good.

[edit: okay, i was checkin' out nugs, and for some reason almost all the shows say that they're currently unavailable for download i am perplexed]
