There's nothing more inspiring to me than watching a musician completely tear it up on a cheaper piece of gear. Don't get me wrong, I love my Foderas and Sadowskys as much as the next guy, but seeing someone hold it down with a Squier (or the like) really depicts the true value of an instrument to me.
So lets see some Youtube vids of musicians using less expensive gear onstage. The more famous the player, the more points you get. 100 points = carrots |

I think the only thing I bought from new are strings, cables and a boss pedal adaptor and daisy chain.
My basses have always been second hand (apart from a DEAN DB95 which I bought from new, sold it to fund something else and was then given it back, gigged it all over, sold it again) as I would hate to take a brand new bass out and get it scratched and this way I don't tend to worry about anything too much. Some people get too hung up on keeping their gear in pristine condition on the road. If you buy new gear and you're in a gigging band either save up the extra for flight cases or take the pain!!!

Grinderman (Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn P Casey and Jim Sclavunos).
Warren Ellis is playing a Squier guitar.

One of my favorite players ever--David Wm. Sims of Scratch Acid, Jesus Lizard and others--primarily plays an old Memphis brand Jazz bass copy.

Cheap Japanese guitar and broken speaker in amp. His steal slide was from the leg of a kitchen table I believe? I don't know all his history but I do love his music.
Had to add this link too, not a live performance but I love this song. Great bass playing on it too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt6V20j2BjQ

| | | | A lot of American Alt/Punk guys use Squires... not saying they're all great but those guys like Pete Wentz, Mike Drint, etc. could be using Fenders.

If you look closely, the lead guitarist is using an Epiphone. I saw a band once who's guitarist was using a Squier, but i can't remember their name.

| | | A now-famous & very popular bassist (Oteil Burbridge) rolled into our area in the mid-'80s playing a stock blonde Fender Jazz, G-K 800RB amp w/ a homemade 15" cabinet. Then he upgraded the cab to a Peavey (w/ 1x18" w/ 2x10").
No youtube videos...trust me, he sounded great.
He leaves the area...
Eventually, he was playing boutique basses (Fodera & Modulus even had a signature Model named after him)...recently, it looks like he's playing a Fender P-bass &/or a Fender Jazz. Tedeschi Trucks Band - Uptight (Everything's Alright) @ the Highline Ballroom, 04/13/11 - YouTube
Sometimes you gotta go back home.
