Can anyone here name the greatest hit songs that featured a fretless bass?
Okay, to make it challenging, no song recorded by Pino Palladino counts here...not to take away from the man's contributions (I mean he's my fretless idol), but it's easy to name "Every Time You Go Away" or "The Lady in Red" ...how about the unsung heroes of fretless?

"Manifest Destiny" - Jamiroquai.

edit: was "Alive" a fretless? If so, then that one too.

To be honest, one of the best fretless players I have seen was Rudy Sarzo when he came through town a few months back. Amazing fretless work/solo..totally underrated player. Although he doesn't have many "hits" I did hear rumor that he's gonna be releasing a solo album soon.. after seeing how well he played I will definately pick it up.

#1 on the list should be the Rolling Stones long catalog of hits. The vast majority of Bill Wyman's work was done on a fretless bass, even if he doesn't get the characteristic fretless sound.
If you mean hits that have the trademark fretless slides and growl:
"Smooth Operator" by Sade (hey it even has a bass solo!!!)
"Feel Like Making Love" by Bad Company
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by the Police |

I dont care how good Pino Palladino is, nothing could make me endure anything by Chris De Burgh.

"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by the Police | Hits are subjective. Tell the people in Japan that Jaco didn't have any hit records. Then, go over to Europe and tell them the same thing about Brand X. Just because it ain't a hit here, doesn't mean that it's not a hit. BTW, "Birdland" went gold when it came out, the only jazz song to do so that year. Sounds like a hit to me and the RIAA!
