Greatest Progressive Album ever

Sign in to disble this ad
What would you consider to be the greatest progressive album ever recorded? Why?

Mine would be "Close to the Edge" by Yes. 1972.
I have enjoyed this record for decades, and have never grown tired of it at all. To me, it takes me on some strange journey to a place that is both peaceful and disquieting at the same time.

Whats yours?

I love many genres of music, and in each there are a few that just "do it" for me.
That said, here's my selections
Emerson Lake & Palmer-"Tarkus"
Rush-"A Farewell To Kings"
Renaissance-"Ashes Are Burning"
Genesis-"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"
Yes-it's a tie between "Going For The One" and "Drama"(that's right, I think it's a great album)

tangent,

It's just too broad a question to pick one definitive answer. BUT I agree with everythig you said about "Close To The Edge". It IS both "peaceful and disquieting".

I listen to Yes at home all the time (I mean almost every day!), and that CD takes me back and gives me chills like the very first time I heard it.

I'm blown away by my continuing appreciation of Squire's bass parts. Phase 1: "That's a bass??" Phase 2: "He can really compose unique parts." Phase 3: "That guy rocks!"

Close to the Edge is tied in my heart with 2112. I can't choose between these two masterpieces.

I guess I'll be the guy that throws the heavyweight Progressive Metal albums out there as the best.

Mastodon tops my list with Crack the Skye. Just a phenomenal album that I have to force myself stop listening to, over and over.

Porcupine Tree may not be as "metal" as the others, but both Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet have consistently blown me away with composition and production.

Blackwater Park by Opeth would be high on the list for me - but I have to listen to it in order. No "singles" from that one for me, it's all or nothing.

Cynic's new Traced in Air record has all the trademarks of a classic, as good or better than Focus was.

I love the older stuff, too, but feel like these bands have taken the word "progressive" to a higher level, learning from the predecessors and adding something new and exciting to the mix.

I'm listening to "Fish out of Water" as we speak.
A true masterwork

Rush - 2112 or Hemispheres
Yes - The Yes Album or Drama (I completely agree with ilovenofrets)
Pink Floyd - Animals or Wish You Were Here
Kansas - Leftoverture
Genesis - Duke
Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Dare I say: Queen - A Night At The Opera ("The Prophet's Song" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" are pretty progressive IMO)

+1 (almost) These would be mine as well.

U.K. - Back in the day my originals band had just one cover song in our set - "In the dead of night" - lovely stuff
Fragile - The first Yes album I really got into and listened to obsessively (and what bass player back in the 70's could forget the impact that Roundabout had on them)
I would have "Foxtrot" as my essential Genesis album - I was crazy about them back then
Red - Awesome

I would add "Gazeuse" by Gong - more wonderfully fluid Allan Holdsworth guitar

Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime.

Oh, wait, progressive like prog, not like politics.

I am sick of a lot of the heavy stuff but i have a weakness for it. If you haven't heard MESHUGGAH yet look them up. Very original. Thee heaviest, craziest, odd, weird time signature stuff you ever heard. Amazing talent. Its hard to listen to for a long time. Listen to the songs "Bleed" and "Pineal gland optics". HOLY HOLY!!!!!!!!!!!

"Thick As A Brick" - Jethro Tull

"Relayer" - Yes, "The Gates Of Delirium" is arguably the greatest progressive rock composition ever written. Check out the concert DVD "Symphonic Yes" the intigration of a full orchestera is its complete evolution to masterpiece.
"Fragile" is one of the spots on my "Perfect Albums Of All Time" list

Rush had multipules as did Pink Floyd.

Rick Wakeman - "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII"
Jon Anderson - "Olias Of Sunhillow"

Kansas - Kansas, One of America's few prog bands "Journey From Mariabronn" is great as are a few other tracks but their best work is spread over several of their earlier albums up through "Monolith"

Journey - Journey, Not many people realize that Journey started out as a serious prog/fusion band. Their first album is awesome and deserves more recognition than it gets.
