Well that's easy! "That Little 'Ole Band from Texas",

ZZ TOP

Same three members since inception and way before most of this forum membership was even born save for a few of us old Farts.

Case closed, end of thread.

Original Tony Williams Lifetime, hands down.

Also, incredibly brief and incredibly violent, but Trio of Doom is kinda sick.

dave matthews band - 8 piece during 2007 when they had a guest appearance on lead guitar.

drummer
sax
trumpet
violin
electric lead guitar
rhythm guitar/vocals
bass
piano

i think arcade fire has a ton of people. i saw them on austin city limits.

I'm pretty sure bang camaro is the largest band ever.

Well, that might be interesting, but probably needs restarting. First thing that came to mind was Steely Dan:
Fagan
Becker +
Piano/keyboards
Bass
Drums
Guitar
Three female backup vocalists
At least three horns

Also Tower of Power - not sure how their lineup has varied, but I think it has hovered around a dozen. Then there's Chicago ...

i'd say the greatest trio ever isn't made up of a drummer, bassist, and guitarist w/vocals

but if we have too... King Crimson on their album Red. yes they were guest musicians on it, but since the idea of this thread is flawed, i'm going with this

Their famous gaggle of singers doesn't consist of permanent band members, though, and they don't tour with the full complement, from what I've read.

Correct. It's made up of Bill Evans, Scott Lafaro, and Paul Motian.
Edit: Sorry, forgot the winky thing -

There's no electric bass guitar in this trio, but I think the Brazilian jazz trio, Trio Da Paz, blows away everything previously mentioned.
