I was searching for Steely Dan material on YouTube, and came across this video, of a young bassist attempting to play the bassline for "Peg", along w. a cd recording of the original. The posters trash this guy (and we all know YouTube is full of keyboard rambos whose sole purpose in life is to talk sh#t on the net), but does this guy suck?
I will this video makes me laugh for some reason... maybe its the mullet.. but I think the playing is ok... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-fsY3jQWKg |

And fwiw, all the more recent comments there are pretty positive.

I always thought that was the trickiest part of the song. This guy plays the turn-arounds right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEbL7gHqQt0
Fun song to play live, tough to sing backing vox and play.

The slap was a little stiff and off time, there were some timing issues in the verses, the turnaround was flubbed and it didn't quite have the funky bounce that tune should have. A big part of that tune is not just the notes but the mutes, the attack and decay of notes and the absolute masterclass is rhythm that Chuck Rainey provided when playing it!
However, it's not a beginners song, and for those unused to finger funk type playing it can be tricky. What I liked about the first video was that the guy looked like he was really having fun playing, and that's inspiring. Obviously if he's having fun now, he will have the drive to perfect the tune and then I bet it will sound awesome given that he has a Modulus Quantum to play it on!
I wish I could get a recording of me playing the tune on my Spector with fresh strings, it sounds amazing. A very different tone to the one on the record but it definitely works imo! |

It is an extremely fun song to play! I probably play it just about as well as the first video as well. I kind of lose it on the playing because I get very animated, it's just so damn fun to play. |

He's struggling here and there.

That guy with all his "clever" comments seems more upset by the fact that people post play along covers on youtube and decides to take it out on one guy. Pointless, stupid. |

| | | | You can't go to any YouTube video which features a musician, and not have a bunch of idiots trash it. If you put a video of the Beatles up there, people will trash them too.. I see trolls in their parent's basement, just getting their jollies off... trolling....
