Some of the other guys on that list have been around 10 years or more...noticed a few doublers, too.

I'd have to agree with that vote.

I don't see how someone can be a rising 'star' when very few people have heard of him. Best young bassist maybe, or best new talent.

He has played with Henry Threadgill; check out Everybody's Mouth's A Book. He's pretty damn bad.
Again, though, that album goes back about 10 years.

Bass Player covered him about a year ago? I did pick up his latest after that...he's bad, too.

ok, let me help you:

a "rising" star is someone who is an outstanding musician but only few (well informed) people know

a "Star" is someone who is an outstanding musician and everybody knows

just spread the word, that will help making him a real Star

I think he is fairly well known in Jazz circles. He's recorded with John McLaughlin and Chick Corea.

I was stoked to see Stomo on that list. I started listening to him with Paul Motian and lately with Cuong Vu. For people who want to hear someone play fretless that's not in the Jaco vein, Stomo's one of the cats.

Gotta love Downbeat!!!!

Well, does he play in any bands or anything? Or does he just play shreddy stuff like the video I posted? Because that's all I've seen, and I'm "impressed" but not impressed.

Really all I've seen him do is shreddy/wanky stuff. Could anybody point me towards something groovy oriented?

I'm all for "technique music" but if they're going to call him the rising star of electric bass, that man better be able to groove.

Nothing like downbeat polls... always a little fishy??? Especially when it comes to electric bass.
No mention of Janek I noticed.

He IS able to groove indeed. Watch out for the new Bireli Lagrene/Electric Side album which is to be released very soon!
There will be very funky groovy stuff.
I also heard rumours that he might participating in some Disco stuff. Just wait, I will keep you posted!

Well, I think, the demands which Hadrien makes on himself and his music are more than only to groove. He uses his instrument not only for the background and accompanying but as the leading instrument for the main tunes and wonderful lyrical solos.

You will discover the beauty and emotions in his tunes after a few listens.

Check out:

-his first Solo-Album Hadrien Feraud/Hadrien Feraud

(Hadrien is currently working on his second album)

-Industrial Zen/John McLaughlin

-Floating Point/John McLaughlin

-5trios/Chick Corea (CD5: Brooklyn, Paris to Clearwater)

IMO, his album does not sound like a bassist-led thing...much like Patitucci's debut, as one example.
Some have called Feraud 'the French Jaco'...so there has to be groove involved.
Trust me, I missed out on a whole lotta '70s Fusion things the 1st go-round 'cause I did not like "Bass Records". Feraud's album did not impress me as such a recording.

I was surprised to see Bona, Di Piazza and Washington in there..these guys have been long established as top players. Janek should def be on that list.

Hadrien is DANGEROUS! Reminds of when Patitucci burst onto the scene. Has those long fingers like Jaco, Stanley and Alain Caron..another cat who's been around a long time but maybe not been recogniseed as his immense talent deserves. Deadly precision on a fretless 6!
