I just happened upon the the movie Hair's soundtrack, and I just want to let anyone who digs the old skool slap funkasticness that this is a must have. The singing can get a little cheesy but the instrumentation made my jaw drop. The sad thing is that there is absolutely no mention of anyone who performed on this recording (with the exception of the singing and composer) even though it is quite obvious that there's a lot of free form expression going on, especially with the bass and drums. Anyone know who the bass player might be? He/she is absolutely amazing!

The original cast recording is not funky at all really, it was written in the 1967 as a representation of the hippy music of the day (I played the original book). The movie was done in 1979 and the music was completely rearranged for the audience of the day (disco and funk ruled supreme).

| | | | super round jazz bass tone recorded in to some vintage console...I would love to know what kind
and the over hand finger style of wilbur is true funk, not the slap crap
guys like Flea, Victor Wooten - or any of the hyper technique guys cant t hold a candle to this kind of combination of groove and tone |

| | | FYI-
Wooten was playing with a lotta finger/funk groove/tone back in the '70s...saw it with my own eyes & it pissed me off.
More info on pg. 27 of the Dec. 2007 issue of Bass Player (Cetera cover).
1968 Original Cast recording is Jimmy Lewis.
The movie soundtrack is Bascomb...Lewis' sub.

He's either a member or a lurker here... or at least was a few years back. He also played on some Jeff Beck albums. I imagine the BP article mentions that. |
