I think the guy behind the N.Y.C. recordings finally started forking over some cash to Jaco's family, making them somehow legit

I don't understand why people trash those "Punk Trash Trio" bootleg CDs, with among others, Hiram Bullock and Mike Stern, on guitar. I realize they are bootlegs, but they showcase another aspect of the complex person Jaco was. I think they are utterly fascinating, inspiring, and, at times, amazing.

I like hearing different interpretations of his own and other people's songs. Most of his perform-ances, I felt though not his best, were nonethe-less, breathtaking. To play, "Teen Town" twice as fast(and his part accurately) as the studio recording live with just a guitar as the only melodic instrument was, and is still, quite a feat! Also, his unrelenting rhythm attack with the drummer and creative fills still leave me in awe. Uh, yeah, but I could have done without, "Wipe out" at the begin-ning of vol. 2. What the heck, they were having fun.

So, in short, I think there is merit in those bootleg recordings of the Jaco trio in NYC. Though not as aurally pleasing as the smooth studio recordings, these historic pieces capture a moment in time of a creative genius, and with him in full passion most of the time.

They aren't my favorite Jaco recordings.....but I still bought them I hope the Bobbings box has the much rumored Pat Metheny jams from Boston,
that was when Jaco was still hungry & sober

I would maintain that anybody who thinks that Jaco was about playing fast, is just missing the point!
