Heard it Through the Grapevine

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys!

I was just browsing YouTube and I found a video of this dude playing "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Gladys Knight and The Pips:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMuh6...0_X-FTJdrmO_MQ

Being a n00b in this Motown and Funk thing (My interests lie mostly in the heavier, uglier side of the music spectrum), i begun searching a video of the exact same track by Gladys Knight, but I only found live versions of the song (with faster tempo and a simpler bassline) and the Marvin Gaye version, which is awesome too, but i never found THAT recorded version of the song.

Can anyone please point me to a video (or the name of the album) in which this track is played?

Many thanks

Either James Jamerson or Bob Babbitt. My gut says Bob Babbitt.

It's Jamerson. You can get the Gladys Knight version on iTunes, and there's a version without vocals on the Standing in the Shadows of Motown CD.

It's Jamerson, and it's on just about every Gladys Knight greatest hits compilation there is, as well as about half the Motown compliations that exist. Probably won't find a video as videos weren't being made then.

Read Gladys' autobiography. She talks about that song being the last straw at Motown. She and the Pips always felt that Berry Gordy didn't support them. They got the song, worked really hard on an arrangement and after they got it the way they wanted, she asked her friend, Marvin Gaye to listen to it. He dug it and said it should be a hit. She recorded it, and Motown released it, but shortly after Marvin released his version.

Get a copy of the Dr. Licks book "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" (the instructional book with CDs) and you can get a performance of it sans vocals with Wil Lee playing Jamerson's line.
