Listen to "A Career In Journalism"

I know, I know. Myspace sucks for sound quality but it's all I've got. I apologize in advance.

I know that he used a Fender Deluxe Active Jazz V and his over time the bassist used several Ampeg Pro heads(4 pro and 6 pro I think), an Ampeg SVT 610 HLF, a Gallien-Krueger 810GLX, and a Sansamp BDDI at some point.
I don't know what he used to record with though. Is the tone that I'm hearing the aluminum cones and the Sansamp? Help me out!

It doesn't sound like a difficult tone to get at all, seems pretty normal.

Basically any combination of the things you listed could get you very close to that tone.

Just use a sansamp and pretty much any amp.

sansamps can really help you get a lot of other tones as well.

Sounds like no tone to me! You can get that sound with just about any equipment. It sounds like a low quality bass with old strings going through a GK Backline setup.

On a budget- MAG 300 head, Avatar 4x10, best bass you can afford. If you want tone options the Sansamp is a good tool for the long run.

Keep in mind when you go to the studio, the tone gets altered all kinds of ways. They might put compression on it, use your DI sound more than the mic, it might be miced a certain way so you get more or less articulation, compress certain frequencies, put it in a certain spot in the mix, etc. If it's high budget, who knows what processing goes into it. I think it's a waste of time trying to duplicate the setup of your heros to sound like them. No one sounds he same live as they do on the album.

it doesn't sound to me like too much of that happened on this recording. pretty much any bass and any amp could get you that tone.

Just cut treble and mids a little and a little boost on bass from what I hear, nothing to crazy on that.
