Help me compile an iTunes playlist

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,

I'm thinking about putting together a playlist of songs representing some really solid, virtuosic, or otherwise good bass-playing.

If you wouldn't mind, recommend your top 3 choices (please name bass player and song/band titles) that you feel should be included...preferrably songs that make you want to drop what you're doing and pick up your bass for a while.

Thanks

Oh wow, 3 songs-- this is tough.

King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - The Sinister Minister
Phish - The Mango Song

I think that's some pretty broad genres for you.

The Who - The Real Me - John Entwhistle
Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On? - James Jamerson
Live - Lakini's Juice - Patrick Dahlheimer

First two are "duh". Third one doesn't get mentioned much, but has AMAZING tone IMO.

"Touch" by Stanley Clarke
"Ten Mile Jog" by George Duke (Christian McBride on a 70's Jazz! For more than 11 minutes!)
"Continuum" by the Jaco Pastorius Big Band (Jimmy Haslip). Haslip's intro on this song is maybe the most beatiful thing I have ever heard!

I have like 1,000 more!!!! And may post them three at a time!

If we're talking Prince, you have to check out "Get On The Boat" on his new disc. Wicked!

Come on man. Led Zeppelin's bass player has to my knowledge always been John Paul Jones. And it is on those recordings as a fact.

My list (extremely hard to choose):
Hair by Graham Central Station (Larry Graham on bass)
Palm Grease by Herbie Hancock (Paul Jackson, bass)
and probably something like Move me no mountain by Chaka Khan (Anthony Jackson, bass)

I hate to be the know-it-all who everybody hates in this forum but I can't help it. The beautiful fretless on "Boys.." is played by Larry Klein, though Pino is quite often (understandably) miscredited for having played it. Pino does play on a couple of other Henley songs though. "New York minute" among others.
