Help Me Get Started

Hey guys looking for some help here. My band has the priviledge of owning a pretty kickin studio equiped with an M-Audio 007 and Pro Tools LE 7 running on a brand new Mac G5, now thats all cool for the BAND recording. But I am interested in doing some solo recording here at home.

My question is what do i need ? I have the bare essentials a good toshiba laptop and my bass and amp. I know i need some good software but im not on that high a budger no Pro Tools here ! So what do I need ? Thanks

Sorry guys ive just relised i put this in recordings instead of recording equiptment !

Just my opinion:

If your band is using pro tools already, you will find it very convenient to have a pro tools setup at home too. Besides making it easier to move sessions back and forth, you'll be spending all your time in front of the same DAW interface. Efficiency with a mainstream DAW has a real value in the music world today, and the skills you hone while getting comfortable with the same interface at home and your practice space may pay off down the road in money saved in the studio, or money you make engineering on your own. The Mbox2 Mini isn't overwhelmingly expensive...or for even cheaper you can get the M Audio Fast Track and Pro Tools M powered.

There are also USB audio interfaces for around $100 that include Cubase LE, but I don't have any experience running those.

I don't know anything about recording software or what it costs. If cubase costs that much less than protools, cubase should suit your needs just fine. I've recorded on both and i think cubase is even a little easier to work with once you get it figured out.

Everyone has their own tastes in these things. I use Ableton Live as my DAW and a Line6 TonePort UX2 as my interface. The TonePort comes with GearBox, software that lets me set up amp/cab/effects simulations. so my signal goes from the bass to the UX2 and then via USB to my laptop.

The TonePort came with a "Lite" version of Live, but it's too limited to be very useful. It does, however, qualify you for an upgrade to the full version, which is what I'm using (though version 6, which is now the previous version).

Oh, add to that a set of headphones for monitoring. I use some cheap Sony's (not sure of the model).
