So I'm starting to get into fusion, but I'm also finding a lot of not so good fusion which I'm sure a lot you will agree exists. I'm talking about the late 60s early 70s stuff. Heres what I have so far
Heavy Weather - Weather Report
S/T - Jaco Pastorius
8:30 - Weather Report
All of Jimi Hendrix official albums (I consider this kinda fusion)
Bright Size Life - Pat Methany trio
I also ordered Emergency! by Tony Williams Lifetime and The Trio of Doom album. You can tell I like some Jaco, but I'm not in it for him I'm trying to branch out. I'm really curious about Mile's Davis fusion years, John McLaughlin, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff not to mention jazz masters like Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea's fusion days. What would you guys reccomend checking out and is a must have for anyone experimenting with fusion.
weather report-black market
return to forever-romantic warrior
tony williams lifetime-believe it
herbie hancock-thrust
mahavishnu orchestra-inner mounting flame
some of the must haves. i could go on for days, but i gotta head back to work. ack!!!
If you want to hear all the best people in jazz fusion, then you should visit www.audiophileimports.com They have dvds and cds of all the people that you would probably never ever hear of unless you hang with fusion cats. The site is full of samples of all the deep cuts.
Played in the NickyBass household this last week:
-Herbie Hancock: Thrust
-Return to Forever: Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy
-Chick Corea: The Leprachaun, The Mad Hatter
-Stanley Clarke: School Days
-Headhunters: (all)
-Medeski Martin and Wood: (All)
-Miles Davis: Black Beauty, On the Corner, Live Evil, Tribute to Jack Johnson
-Wayne Krantz: Greenwich Mean, Your Basic Live
I have a ton of other records, but these ones are in the current rotation.
abstractlogix.com is another hip place for fusion CDs.
+1
If you limit yourself to the late 60's/early 70's time period, you'll miss out on a lot of good fusion. There is a lot of great fusion being made today!
