Help my band decide what track to keep!

So, my band was recently in the studio and we did 2 versions of one song. One take has the lead guitarist singing, the other has our normal vocalist.

We're trying to decide what track to use on our EP and I figured I could get some good input here.

You can find the tracks on www.myspace.com/jetpackblack
It's the song entitled "New Girlfriend" and there are 2 versions, one labeled "Victor's vox" and one labeled "Shelby's Vox." Victor is the guitarist, Shelby is the singer. Victor is rather adamant about keeping his version since he wrote the song for his girlfriend and he doesn't like the idea of someone else singing it, however we're trying to have the best possible EP, so he understands the need to have the better track.

Also, the recordings are live recordings, with a few flubs here and there. Also, the song is pretty stupid, honestly. I don't like any lyrics my guitarist ever writes

I vote Shelby's vox. His vocal style just seems to fit the song better.

Shelby. He's more into it sounds and it fits well.

By the way, love the name and logo.

Shelby for sure. He's got a very Tom Petty/Lou Reed thing going on. Not that he sounds like those two all that much, but that he doesn't have a great voice but it's really compelling. There's something interesting and very listenable about it.

Not to be mean, but Victor's vocal only sounds like it belongs if this were a satire. Like a Dead Milkmen type of thing.

I agree with your assessment of the lyrics. The song sounds pretty good with Shelby singing but the words are pretty insipid. I'd say that if this turns into a big fight that the solution would be to tell Victor that maybe he should use it for a "solo project".

Good luck.

By the way, I dig the other song on your MySpace. Kody Tuttle Was a Cowboy. The mix needs a good deal of work (especially the bass) but it's very cool. I'm not sure how it would fit side by side with a song like "New Girlfriend" but it might make a good closer for your album or EP.

I love you, TalkBass.

As for the stupid lyrics, I never really openly criticize Victor's writing since I'm not bringing that many songs to the table. Shelby does have free reign to rewrite any of them though.

And yes, I agree that Victor's singing sounds funny, it's way too comical to even think about using, IMO

That recording is an older live recording. It's pretty much one microphone in a room. We should have the newer version from the studio later this week. Thanks for the compliment

Editing to Add: If you guys do like the sound and stuff, we'll be putting up the rest of the tracks once we've got good results from everyone about the vocal tracks. You get to hear Shelby much better then.

Did you really need to create a poll for this ? There's no contest involved: your guitarist basically has no pitch recognition and his voice is scratchy and annoying.

Yes but the guitarist doesn't want to listen, so I need as much feedback as possible to make sure he never does this again.

Seems like the problem in a nutshell, he doesn't hear the track like the rest of us.

Kinda like some of the "Idol" Mothers.
