I was wondering how I can re-create the sound and tone of John's bass. I have a copy cat of the Ephiphone's copycat of the Beatle bass. Not entirely sure what strings I got, but I just got a Digitech 200 pedal yesterday so what kind of setting should I use to do it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oynWTrw0jok

| | LICENSED TO KILL - any song I play! | | | | | Sounds like sloppy playing by someone who has no concept of dynamics with the picking hand. Strings too low hitting the frets gives the same, er, "tone."

| | | | He's not really using a bass per-say. It's a Fender baritone guitar. The things have a pretty unique tone that is hard to replicate.

But to get in the ballpark, play hard with a pick, close to the neck, and keep all volume and tone knobs up full.

I can pull off a pretty good impression with my old Jazz, so much that I assumed for a long time that one was used on the original recording.
Most of the 'Helter Skelter' sound is in the brutal attack.

If you listen to Back In The USSR, which I'm sure is a VI, notice the two tones sound very different - the VI has a 'deep guitar' kind of twang and not too much bottom.
Intriguing.
