Herbie Hancock working on Joni Mitchell Tribute project.

"My next record, which is on Verve Records, is really kind of a portrait of Joni Mitchell and her life," Says Hancock. Other players include Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta, who I don't really associate with Jazz drumming, so I guess we'll see another side to his playing. At least I will.

Also featured on the album will be Tina Turner, Sting, Norah Jones and others. Joni herself sings on one track.

Joni is a great singer , songwriter and great all around total musician. When she did her jazz thing she chose the best musicians to be in her groups.

The relatively new k.d. Lang CD has a couple of amazing covers of Joni tunes. It's an interesting CD... all covers of her favorite artists from Canada (including Neil Young). Very nice.

I love Herbie's playing (along with Wayne) on the Travelogue CD... simply amazing.

I'm not a huge fan of tribute CD's, and Herbie's last few attempts at 'crossover' music have really left me flat.

That being said... I'll sure give it a listen when it comes out.

+ 1 on the K.D. Lang!
Diana Krall does a smokin' rendition of Black Crow on her Live In Montreal DVD with Peter Erskine and Robert Hurst in her rhythm section.

This project does look / sound really cool, I heard about it a couple of months ago - but what I did do recently was finally buy a copy of Hejira and re-visit Don Juan's Reckless Daughter - both with Jaco on - I don't own Mingus but it's not as big a favourite of mine, but those two albums are incredible - Hejira just blows me away for both the songwriting (Joni's lyrics are awesome) but also the way Joni and Jaco wrok together - so special - you have to own these albums - some of JP's best work.
