I feel a need to start this w. stating that I'm not religious... as a matter of fact, as I've stated on here before, I'm a full blown atheist...
With that said, I'm realizing that I love gospel music! I don't know what it is, but I just eat it up... especially the bass playing.
Are there any recordings I need to get my hands on? Any specific players I should have on my radar?
I should add that I don't want anything overwhelmingly preachy (i.e. no orations pre-first-verse condemning all non followers of jesus to hell). It's not that I mind "praising God" or life and living for that matter... but please, minimize the hell stuff, if at all possible.
I really appreciate it... as a non-church attending half-roman-catholic/recovering-reformed-jew, it's a tad bit hard for me to come across this awesome music on my own accord.
Thanks a ton!

israel houghton's bassist
fred hammond - he plays on his records, live player is killer too
andrew gouche - he IS gospel bass, plays on a bunch of different records
gospel music is going to have Jesus and God mentioned cause that's the whole focus of the music. so you can't really escape that. the whole go to hell thing is some other genre, i listen to a lot of gospel/christian music and have never heard fire and brimstone in tunes, maybe christian metal or something, but not gospel. |

| | | First of all, JoZac,
I have to say, I'm pretty much right there with you: prolly more agnostic, but LOVIN the gospel music, and I absolutely LOVE gospel bass! Exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkQtHM41D9g
(Chicago Mass Choir: Live in Nashville)
I understand bassman Rodney Jones is rather young, 16 at the time of the recording (2003).
I too am very unaware of who's out there doing this music right, but so keen to know more. So, thanks for the thread!

Also, as I kind of mentioned before, I don't mind Jesus and God being metioned... that's inevitable... plus, "Jesus loves you" is cool, since anyone loving anyone's a good thing... I'm just turned off by the whole "you're going to hell if you don't believe what I believe" bit... which is quite different...
Word... keep it coming... loving it!
