Man, I've tried sooo hard to like Hiromi's stuff but I just can't dig it at all.

Technically superb music. Melodically, does nothing at all for me.

Different stokes for different folks... No big deal...
Personally, I love her melodies and her compositions and creativity are downright scarey...
I've seen her live twice and her sensitivity and feel are second to none! I prefer her work to just about anyones, and I am a huge fan of Ahmad Jamal (who produced her first album and discovered her) to Herbie to Corea. My other favorite on the keys is Uri Caine.
What I love about Hiromi is when she improvises, you literally have no idea where she might take you... It's really quite a musical rollercoaster...
I saw her in Louisville KY at the jazz factory and sat next to a world reknown jazz educator/ pianist Harry Pickens (who now lives in KY) He commented to me between sets that he felt like he just witnessed something similar to what listeners felt when they heard Monk or BeBop for the first time...in the sense of complete mastery that Hiromi has and the total picture she presents to the listener. To me, when I listen to her, I hear all musics on equal footing... jazz complemented by funk, rock, classical, etc... all living in the same space, all equally important to the song.
There were several "old folks" in the crowd who didn't know what they just saw when it was over It was quite hilarious to hear them talk between sets, too. They weren't sure how she was playing all that together and calling it jazz... they were also taken back by how loud it was! (and it wasn't THAT loud...) She was RIPPING up the Moog... The live sound was mixed perfectly. Tony Grey was absolutely killing his bass parts, too! His Fodera sounded perfect and the feel he had with the drummer was amazing!
Sorry to ramble... but Hiromi goes to eleven in my book!

Wow! I don't really listen to jazz but seeing these vids makes me think I should. At the very least, I'm going to check out Uehara's albums.

I like the part in XYZ when she starts banging on the piano with her fist.

I am definitely a fan of her and the band - Tony is one of my fave new players to emerge recently as the more I listen to his style and especially his solos, the more I see and hear how cool his concept is - it's melodic it's great. I saw them at Ronnie's a year or so ago and it was excellent - a two hour set on a Sunday night - fantastic. As for the mix of classical, jazz, funk and electro it's all good and delivered with such energy I think they are a world beating band and I'd love to see them at a major festival here in the UK soon - I just love the way they deliver their music with such drive and enthusiasm and the unison lines are pretty nuts as well - they are still growing as musicians as well so they can only get better. A really great new band.

I dig. I saw the video of her with Tony Grey and the one of her with Chick and I was like "As, so the girl can play" !

Really though, she is quite marvellous.

I heard someone mentioning Herbie Hancock. He played in my city with Natahn East on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums last week and I missed him because I didn't know he was coming!

Check out Tony's solo album sometime, like Janek Gwizdala, these new British imports write some wonderful material besides having chops. Along with Hadrien Faraud, I think there is something in the water over there.

Hrm. I was just looking up her CDs on Amazon and there's a lot of hate over there in the customer reviews. I don't get it. I mean, it's one thing to not like her music, but a lot of the comments are pretty vicious.

Whatever. I think she's cool.

Crap, what a combo! That show would be great.

Uehara is amazing. Hadn't heard of her, so thanks for sharing those!

Thanks for the YouTube links. I've heard a bit of her stuff before but not much. Her CDs now top my wanted list; a live show would be even better!

I think Tony Grey and his Fodera are enough bass content for anyone

Nice. She is one of those artists that I enjoy in small doses.

Hiromi is the best. All her albums are superb, but her latest Spiral stands head and shoulders above the others. A true talent. I was so inspired by her I did this ambigram of her name a while ago (Cheesey I know)

Truly amazing stuff! I found the videos few days ago as one of my friends gave me the link, I had to come check out if there's any discussion about her here

In my opinion, Kung-Fu World Champion is even more intense than the second part called The Return of Kung-Fu World Champion..
