How about some love for David Hungate?

OK, seriously.... Lowdown from Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees.
Wow. I hope I never grow tired of hearing that bass line. If this recording doesn't inspire you, you should seriously think of taking up another instrument.

Hungate has laid down so many great tracks with Scaggs, Toto, etc. -- not flashy, just the right notes every time. Yet, I don't hear his name much when people mention inspiring bass players. Where's the love for this guy?

I loved his work on Lowdown and Gorgy Porgy. My guess is that he is the funkiest son of Congressman to ever thump a bass.

Lowdown? I'm getting the tingles just thinking about it.

How about that gallop on Lido Shuffle? Or the slap in the chorus on Rosanna?

His work with Bonnie Raitt is further evidence of a highly evolved musician and artist...

Personally I've always dug "Lido Shuffle" more than "Lowdown".

Big +1 on "Georgy Porgy". The youngsters ask me, "how should a bassist and a drummer play together?" and I put that track on for them straightaway and say, "like this."

99 is where it's at. such a tasteful 'solo' at the end and a great slap line. imo a very underrated bassplayer that played exactly what the song needed but just a little bit more to make it unique and inspiring. one of my faves

to the dude above: big +1. porcaro an hungate were groovemeisters.

I forgot about 99. I wonder why I never got the first Toto album?

Jeff Porcaro. RIP. That dude has inspired me more than about 95% of the bassists I've ever heard.

Lowdown is one of my favorite tunes from the 70's my favorite decade for music if I had to pick just one. I believe I read an article in BP mag where he said he overdubbed the pops in that bassline.

I also remember reading a BP article where Verdine White said that Earth Wind & Fire was in the studio suite next door at the same time Boz Scaggs was recording Silk Degrees (a great name for an album BTW) and he believes the a bass line for Low Down sounds eerily familiar to a line he was working on at the same time and it may have influenced the Low Down bassline. Interesting

In any event I love the song. I remember when I was a kid recording it 3 consecutive times in a row off the radio on cassette tape of all things. Boy that was a long time ago.

Verdine clearly would know about this much better than I, but Lowdown is way more laidback just about anything I can think of by Verdine White, even his ballad work.

Love "Georgy Porgy" The whole albums is bada$$ with a variety of grooves. Who out there is doing that today?

I'll have to dig thru my old BP mags. I believe Verdine names the EWF song with similar bassline.

Yeah, he did overdub the pops. You can tell if you listen closely. Interestingly, or perhaps not, Porcaro also overdubbed a second hihat track, which is key to the groove. The two hats are panned fairly hard left-right.

I don't own that album, but I remember it with great fondness, because back in the day I had a girlfriend who played it incessantly. I still almost feel as if I know some of the songs by heart, even though I haven't heard them for years (decades in some cases).

I revisit Silk Degrees often, I don't think there is a wasted bass note on the album. I clinic on playing for the song and tasty use of double stops.

Great bassist who used to have an individual style and got assimilated by the Nashville idiots who run the country music business, and now might as well be one of a thousand. Sorry but it's true.

[ignoring the post above from JimmyM]

David Hungate is one of my all-time favorites. I always mention him when the topic comes up. When I try out a bass, I still run the bass line from Hold the Line off the first Toto record.
