How do I use an Avalon U5's speaker input?

Yes, I know it may be a strange question, but I've heard a few different things about how to use it. First, it may help if you know my options, and what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to mic the cabinet, and send a direct signal from the amp into the U5. I have 2 (200w@) 8 ohm speaker outs on the amp, 1 to the cab, one to the U5. I've read that I can plug 1 speaker output, directly from my amp into the U5's speaker input, is this correct? The manual for the U5 says to "Always use your speaker cabinet with your amplifier." I just need to make sure I'm doing this right. Any information should be useful. thank you
