How do my covers compare to my competitor? (Videos)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, i'm trying to rise up on youtube as a fun project.

Basically I have one competitor - MCGoogles1000.

I disregarded other people who do these covers as they have little replay value when it sounds as if the bass is not plugged in and the original song is distorted to camera sounds.

He is of course beating me as he has more covers, more views, has been around longer, and is more a well-known name on youtube.

I am looking for how my covers compare to him, good and bad. How i am better and how I am worse. Here's a list of what I have come up with:

How I'm better:
• Tone
• Extended Range so I don't get the awkward sound of octaves
• Mix

How I'm Worse:
• One noticeable mistake in Informal
• Less speed

(Though this will probably come with practice. I included his AotS video to show you. There's one riff I can't do, and it is the scale run halfway down then all the way up and a quarter down from the 9th fret up to the 12th/11th on the G, after the intro riff is played at a slower tempo)

Song 1 Comparison:

Him

More covers soon to come once i get my amp back

You sound good dude! I think you sound as good as he does. Only 2 cents I have is try to one up this dude by doing tunes that he should be playing but isn't yet. Make him look like the imitator!

Haha yes. I'm working on a song by them right now called Sun of Nothing. It's got a very odd bass line that is VERY essential in many many parts. It's 10 minutes 59 seconds long so learning it will take a bit. I think if I dedicate my usual 6 hours/day playing to learning this i'll have it down in two days. Videos to come once i get my amp back in two weeks if I can't get a tone out of this pod.

Music is not a competition. There's no need to try and one up anyone and make anyone look inferior.

Now that that's said, I like you're tone better. It sounds deeper and fuller than his. His sounds way too bright and brittle for my liking.

In an actual band setting, his tone is way better. Your tone is fine for the bedroom, but will mud up the mix.

As far as the rest of it goes, I never got the appeal of the 'play along with the record' youtube videos. It's just a small piece of the practice needed to be a musician.

How about some clips with a band or solo stuff? Then I could judge if I like it or not.

Is competition not a good thing? We're both good friends and are just firing stuff back and forth.

We're doing this to improve techniques and entertain people. Plus it's always fun to know how to play along to our favorite songs.

But my dad seems to think the videos are meant to show off to his coworkers.

Well the tone is set for the video, not for a band mix. So I don't think that's a problem.

The point is for entertainment. It's fun for us, and it's fun to watch others when they have a good video. Take Chin for example, his guitar covers are sometimes preferred over the original.

Tell me that's not entertaining to watch for somebody who enjoys this style of music.

I am in the process of still forming a band. So it will be a long time before you see any band videos.

Haha. That's just a nickname I got as a kid. My name is jared and my hair used to be a jarhead cut. That was seven years ago but oh well. I'm only 14.

If it's fun, it's fun... enjoy. I just can't get into watching people practice.

It's not entertaining to me... it's a guy playing along with an mp3 while standing there staring at his fingerboard. Put him doing the tune with a live drummer and bassist and I could dig it.

Haha. If you have annotations I noted that I did have my fly open and I was licking my lips the entire video.

My dad swears he made the video by walking in with the beer during the song.
