How Do You Mix Guitar/Bass in Metal?

I am interested in the different approaches TB'ers have taken to get a great guitar/bass mix.

This time around I am thinking of sitting down with the engineer and working out exactly what frequencies we want to shine through, and intentionally give each other some sonic space.

My advice would be to not say a word to the engineer about what frequencies you want!!! It would be like him telling you which notes to play or how to play them in the song. Let him do his job. I have found that engineers hate when musicians start talking frequencies and compression ratios!!!

Take him some CD's of stuff you like the tone of, and tell him that you are really digging this mix and sound. That is a much better way to approach it!!!!

make sure your tone's don't clash, try to make them complement each other. Watch the treble also, there's nothing worse than going to a metal show and hearing nothing but treble coming out of both amps, its rediculous.

Panning can help too, but when the track is centered , it has the most power, imo, but slight panning can give you guys some space to work with.

I see your point. Thing is, last time this dude, baby jesus rest his soul didnt do the greatest guitar/bass mix. We are working with him again but just want to do it a little better.

Guitars were way too thick relative to the band. Bass didnt have a full low end to it. It's just the way he does things, and he's a bass player himself!
