How do you think this tone can be achieved?

The tune- "Some Fool's Mess" by Gallon Drunk. From their album You, the Night... and the Music, one of my all-time fave records.

I believe it's a Fender Jazz Bass, but that's my only hunch. There's definitely some sort of overdrive going on. Not sure it's from an amp, a pedal, or what. I figured that maybe someone might recognize this as a tone they can easily get (e.g., "that's easy, it's just a jazz bass with ___ strings being played through a ____ head with the ___ turned all the way up" etc.). But any theories or ideas are welcome.

It is difficult to find a link to a sound sample, but amazon.com has sound samples (track #2):

Sounds like there is a pick being used with some light overdrive.

That's about all I could figure out, but I was hoping for more specific ideas as far as the bass type, which pickup, the amp, what pedal (if any), or even string type....because I sure can't get that tone with my current amp and overdrive pedal...

I mean, as far as I know, that might be one of the signature sounds of a specific type of tube amp that a lot of TBers have...

I made a brief soundclip from the original song file that's probably better quality than the amazon clip, and posted it for download:
