How good is In Rainbows?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just finished my first full run-through of Radiohead's new cd... and damn! I've been keeping track of Radiohead for the last year, hearing them try out their stuff on the stage, so I thought I had a pretty good idea of what was going on before the first list.

The arrangements of everything are absolutely beautiful. There was not a single song that I didn't get butterflies on because of how just awesome and emotional the album sounds. There seems to be a few songs that could've come from the Amnesiac/Kid A years, but for the most part the songs seems to have a more jazzy and yet new age sound to it. It's both absolutely terrifying and absolutely beautiful, just as Thom promised.

Anybody else love the new cd?

It's a great album and I think OP's post sums it up with the butterflies.

I agree. It blows HttT out of the water. If you haven't yet, I recommend listening to it on some good headphones. It's two competely different experiences. It makes me all goosebumpy. I can't wait till I get my vinyls, either.

I like it. I wouldn't say that I'm a huge Radiohead nut or anything, so I didn't really have any expectations, but it still hit me as something pretty different. It's much more "organic" sounding...kind of like OK computer but more jazzy. It's cool.

I've only listened to it once. So far I really love the drumming. I find the last half of the CD could use a little more energy, but that's just a personal preference. But it has some great soothing vocals.

i am absolutely loving this album. it is very solid and much more organic than HTTT was (which i loved as well though, especially for all the modular synth and max/msp treatments..im a geek when it comes to electronic music and synths :P)

i also really like Colin's bass tone and lines on this album

This is easily the best album purchase i've made in at least a year. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful and so emotional.

The bass lines on the album are pretty sweet too (especially on the last 1:30 of "15 steps").

I liked this album on first listen, but the more I hear it the more I like it. I did think the track listing could be better though. When I burnt it to CD to listen to in my car I put the songs in this order:

1. Faust Arp
2. Jigsaw Falling Into Place
3. Bodysnatchers
4. Arpeggi/Weird Fishes
5. Videotape
6. 15 Steps
7. House Of Cards
8. Reckoner
9. All I Need
10. Nude

For whatever reason, I really like the album in this order.

Yeah, I hate having videptape be the last song. The cd needs to go out with a little more of a bang.

I'm enjoying it, and agree with the comments about the drumming. He's one of the most interesting drummers in rock; reminds me a little of Mitch Mitchell.

I disagree about Videotape. I think it's the perfect closing track.

I really love this album, though. I'm a fairly big Radiohead fan, so I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out in relation to their older stuff, but I'm very, very happy.

I'm listening to the album for the first time now, and I do think it's probably their best album since OK computer. It's a good mix of Kid A/Amnesiac (yeah, they could have been the same album), The Eraser, and OK Computer, I think. I won't say "perfect mix," but it's good.

I think the drumming is okay, but I've never thought anything he did was very amazing. So, it surprises me others think that.

0 pounds/dollars/yen/pesos...

I will buy the vinyl box set if I really get into the album, because I am a "collector" of CDs and records, to a certain extent, but let's all remember that these guys charge $40 up, up, and up for concert tickets and have sold millions of records around the world. They are not hurting for money.

I think it;s pretty good. Call me an idiot but I sent them 4 pounds (a little over 8 of my American dollars, basically comparable to iTunes or amazon http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi) for the dl. I really felt like supporting this honestly, mp3's with no physical product are worth about 8 USD to me.

Still no OK Computer, but definitely the best since then. I really dig it so far.

It's the most interesting and enjoyable new album I've heard for a few years. I gave them 8 pounds. Mad props.
