Question How to play through USB interface and have computer transcribe what i am playing

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried looking for this info, but wasn't successful.

I have a bass part i would like to transcribe to either TAB or score.

I have an M-audio Fast track USB audio interface and software like Garageband and Guitar Pro 5.3.

I know there are ways to convert my analog recording from analog to MIDI post recording, but is there some interface that would go in between my m-audio interface and my computer that would change it to MIDI sort of "real time"?

I'd like to be playing my bass and see the notes i am playing on the screen.

I know guys do this with MIDI keyboards. I just figured there would be a way to do this with my [analog] bass signal.

Maybe i can't do this? lol..

There is a chance that Melodyne could do that, since it has that Direct Note Access technology.

or maybe even a simpler audio software could do that, I don't know...

Thanks for that link. i know you can do it with a MIDI instrument, but i'm not sure about analog instruments...

okay i did some research. here's what i know:

1. looks like Apple's Logic* can record the analog audio (duh).
2. it can also convert the analog to MIDI.
3. it can transcribe/score from a MIDI instrument

so...could it then the converted MIDI info and transcribe it?
(kinda an A-->b-->C, where "b" is the whole analog to MIDI intermediate step)

What you experts think?

*i refer to Logic because it seems to be the cheapest and easiest way to do this on a Mac. Maybe there are better programs for recording, converting, and transcribing out there? (all i know is that it seems Logic will do all three, albiet not at once, which i guess is kind of beyond our current technology).

Logic Express 9 is here on Friday, and the M-Audio interface is here on Sat. So maybe by this weekend i'll have some decent clips (with some transcriptions woot!)
