Hi, I'm trying to find out how people would describe the music my band makes. Not because we want to limit ourselves to a particular style but because we need to put something on the posters more specific that "metal". So if you think there's a particular name for what we're doing, or if you think, "Hey that sounds like so-and-so" then please let me know. Please. Thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CItDYTn3SbY

I think Iron Maiden are probably the biggest influence on me and the guitar players. Our drummer's mostly into much heavier stuff though. Would heavied-up-Maiden be a good description?
BTW we actually did a song from the second Iron Maiden album at our last gig - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws3nQr8x4qY

You guys seem to play with a melodic but heavy approach that Maiden and some other bands from the 80's were known for. I'm glad to see that someone is still carrying the torch for this kind of music. I really can't find a band that does this in my area.

Part of what got us going was that all the local rock bands seemed to be either punk bands that shouted at you or metal bands that screamed at you, and we were more into the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands, and American bands of the same era like W.A.S.P. There's a few bands in our neck of the wood (Scotland) doing the same thing, and it seems to be going down well.

While "heavy metal" is a perfectly accurate description, when we've told people that we were a heavy metal band some people have responded that they "don't like all that screaming stuff" and we have to explain that we're not that kind of heavy metal. I was just wondering if there was a more unambiguous way to describe what we're doing?

If you heard this phrase would you think of the kind of stuff my band is doing? Power Metal / Speed Metal - Probably not power metal, possibly speed metal. Speed metal seems to be a tricky genre to define. NWOBHM influenced metal - Good, but a bit of a mouthfull I'd call us New New Wave of British Heavy Metal if I thought I'd get away with it. Old School Heavy Metal - We've had people shout this at us, though when we've tried identifying ourselves as "old-school" some people expect a Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin kind of thing. Depends on the age of the person as to what's "old-school" I guess.

Good stuff no matter what you call it!
