How's the mix?

Check out the tunes on our myspace page. These are the rough mix. What do you think of the mix? Too much of something? Not enough of something?

Input would be appreciated.

Anyone? You can say negative things if you want. I'm a big boy. You can also say positive things.

First of all, I like the music, especially Slow Weevil. Nice job!

Take all this with the requisite giant grain of salt of course. I'm listening on headphones, so I might feel different if I heard it on speakers.

I think you need to carve more of a sonic space for each instrument. Everything seems rather mid-focused. I want to hear more lows and sparkle from the drums, and the rimshot jumps pokes me in the ear a bit too much.

The bass sounds good and is very articulate, but I want to hear it sounding more thick and "bassy", at least at points.

In general I feel like I want to hear a bit more reverb, but maybe that's a part of my feeling that there is too much hi-mid and not enough highs and "air".

A bit of good overall compression might be good to "glue" the instruments together, too.

On The Crustaceous Crab in particular, the guitar could be louder.

Hope that doesn't come across too critical or nit-picky, these things are subjective and hard to put into words...

Thanks smeet. I agree with a lot of what you said. My preferred bass tone is mid-rangy, and we plan on adding some lows to the mix. We'll work on the drums.

I agree with most of this. Exceptions being overall compression & reverb. I think, once the mid focus, sparkle & depth of staging is corrected...the overall room sound and compression would be extreemly minimal.
Overall, VERY well done. Cool tune & excellent playing.

Sounds great. I would change the kick drum sound a bit, it sounds a little "boxy". I would make the snare a little more snappy too but thats just me though. I liked the guitar and bass tones. More bass on the bass would sound cool but if that's not your style then that's not your style.

Thanks guys. The tough thing about the drums is that over 10 tunes we used 4 different drummers. On the 4 tunes that are on myspace, there are three drummers. Trying to record the drums consistently when you have 4 drummers playing the same set is tough.

I should have said that the bass is my Warrior Signature 4 run directly into the board. I have since gotten a Low End True Voice Tube Preamp, and we are going to actually re-amp it and run a second track through the pre, so that should fatten up the tone a bit.

These songs were all recorded live with all three of us playing. The keys/Rhodes were added in later by the guitarist.

It's always helpful to have other ears listen to what you are doing. You get so used to the sound that you miss things. Thanks again.
