Thumbs up Hubert Laws: In The Beginning

I just purchased this disc less than a week ago and I dig it! I don't know if I like the work of any other flautist as much as I like Hubert's. Most of the music that I have heard from him was from the 80's and more commercial. What other releases focusing on the flute by Hubert or others would be nice to own?

Not a Hubert Laws release, but I think I first became aware of him from one of my all-time favorite Chick Corea tunes--"Windows". The definitive version IMO is from a double LP [vinyl] whose name escapes me--maybe 'Tones for Joans Bones' or 'This Is New' or 'Straight Up and Down' [each of these is a track on this release]; I want to say the bassist is either Ron Carter or Steve Swallow. Note that this is ancient, pre-Return To Forever.

Anyway, the tune is beautiful, and the playing from Corea and Laws is perfection. Interestingly, the piano solo is first, and then the dynamics drop back as Laws enters with a memorable minor 9th arpeggio figure to begin his solo, which is great; then the out chorus and vamp. It's just a lovely piece of music. [Note to Real Book owners: key is B, not Bb!].

If you like Hubert Laws or Chick Corea, you should get this recording.

Thanks for the suggestion! I found the track that you mentioned but it looks like it is on Inner Space. Ron Carter and Steve Swallow are listed. It also appears on these albums...........

Check out Milt Jackson's "Goodbye" w/ Hubert Laws .Recorded late '73, a few months before "In the Beginning".

Nice one and it would serve two purposes. More of Hubert and it's also a CTI release. My CTI collections is lacking. The plan is to work on acquiring more from that label. Blue Note stuff has been my priority for a while and my acquisitions of those discs are looking pretty decent at the moment. I still need more mind you but CTI discs will become more important for the time being.

I managed to get my hands on James Moody The World Is A Ghetto recently. Nice flute on that disc but Hubert still moves me more. It's odd. The only other person that I can think of whose music featured the flute is Tim Weisberg.
