I wish I had found this album BEFORE I graduated high school, because the overall feeling of it encapsulates so much of the highschool experience. It's so full of dreary-yet-melodic-and-reflective hardcore punk. My current favorites are "Something I Learned Today," "Standing by the Sea," "Somewhere" and "Never Talking to You Again."

Thoughts?

I didin't get the album until my junior year of high school, but I had had a few songs from it on my computer thanks to Napster (oh those were the days.)

"Pink turns to Blue" was my favorite, I would hum it between classes; great band, great song, great album.

Speaking of which, I haven't listened to Hüsker Dü in ages, I should dig it up.

Great album 'though it has some filler (but which double album hasn't?). My favourites are "Somewhere", "Chartered Trips" and "Newest Industry".

What was pretty impressive to me at the time of the release and even more so in hindsight is that a punk/hardcore band in 1984:
1) released a double-album
2) it was a concept album

Punk kid from a crappy home says goodbye to friends, heads out into the world, experiments with drugs, religion, etc., finds the world a pretty wretched place, realizes in the end it was all a dream.

Or at least that's how I understood it.
