I don't understand how YouTube works.

I don’t understand how copyrighted material is handled. There are tens of thousands of karaoke-type play along videos of standard, famous classics tunes posted. On the other hand, people get “flagged” for nonsense. My buddy make very nice soundless videos of Niagara Falls, Parachuting, Nature… and then adds “pretty” elevator/Musac music to it and gets flagged.

So, “Penny Lane” makes it thru, while “The Wind Whistles thru the Chipmunk’s Ears” by Gustuv Dgrlilisv gets flagged.

How does YouTube work??

Just depends on who actually owns the rights to the music. They have a filtering thing that catches stuff. If they told everyone how it works that would defeat the purpose.

I understand all of that but fail to see the company that owns “Penny Lane”, which is probably 100,000Xs larger with millions at stake allows it while Muddly Duddly Productions is on some “list”.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m all for Intellectual Property rights but I’m also for equitable treatment. Not being as lawyer, I’d argue that having a “list” is selective enforcement.

I think it has more to do with YouTube's liability. Some labels are more aggressive about protecting their properties, even after the artist may have left and wants to post a piece that the label may claim as theirs.

The Internet, while broadening accessibility sure has changed things in a relatively short period of time like movies, music, porn, book sales and organizations (can you imagine a Talk Bass Hall/meeting once a week/month in every city/region represented with dues paid to the international org?).
