I Don't Usually Like Bass Solos, But This Is Ridiculous.

I can honestly say that this is the best bass solo I've yet heard. I think I'm going to sell all of my gear off.

You're not really going to seel your gear off. Not everyone needs to be Wooten. Bass, like people, isn't cookiecutter.

That was a great solo. Love his use of melody in there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Wooten and think he's one of the best out there but sometimes I do feel he overuses the million-note-a-minute double thumping technique. Granted, he didn't do much of it in this solo.
I guess for me it just gets old after awhile, kind of like watching Yngwie Malmsteen fly through one sweep-picked harmonic minor run after another. It only holds my fascination for so long.

That super fast slapping thing reminds me of when Coltrane does that thing where he plays two notes at the same time. Just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should put it in your music.

Otherwise it was awesome. I love that he puts his phrases together so musically.

After viewing this solo I looked at some of the other Wooten videos, check out the one of him cutting Zenergy in the studio with Carter Beauford. This one shows just how incredible he is when he's not soloing.

its on the dave matthews live in chicago dvd i think. i used to have the whole show on my comp. i think this is one of the more tastfull examples of double thumbing btw, it representrs the climax of the solo. its also the only time he does it in the performance, hence the reaction from the audience.

This is the whole song, and the bass solo is a little clearer in this version.

A very nice solo indeed, and all props to Mr. Wooten, but props also to the band for that lovely, soulful minor-chord progresssion. I think a LOT of us could have laid down a pretty tasty solo on top of that progresssion.

I liked how he did a bass solo while still staying in the bass range, he didn't have to go up to the 900th fret, he played well

Very nice. I'll admit, I'm really not much of a Wooten fan. Yeah he has chops, but his solo's get really boring for me really quick. These videos were nice though. A nice mix of chops, melody and groove.

Couldn't agree more. Well said.

He kept it under control, at least at the start. I would have prefered a nice laidback fretless solo on that though.
