Sloop John B - Beach boys. What was he thinking??!! He fiddles around hitting every note except the root, there's no consistency in his style and as a result it does my nut in every time I hear it.
Otherwise, I like the song.
What bass lines do you hate in an otherwise OK song? |

For a bass player, these songs are primarily one note wonders. |

| | | | I typically dislike lines that are all over the place or just plain boring.
example of all over the place: Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar (love the band though)
example of boring: most AC/DC etc

| | | | Is "Sloop Jonn B" Carol Kaye playing Bass ? It shure sounds like her to me. I would not put the blame on her,I would think Brian Wilson gave the order for her to play that. I love all that pick you hear, gotta be Carol. Like Mike Love says "This is the worst trip I've ever been on". |

| | | | I'm clueless...whatever.
I'm firmly in the camp that the early Experience records are pretty much unlistenable...because of the bass tone, etc. Billy Cox was far better with Mitchell &/or Miles with Hendrix.

I tend to hate "quarter notes on beat 1 and 3" lines and I feel what the bass is playing doesn't complement the cool guitar riff well. I can't stand listening to "Float On" by Modest Mouse, either, no idea why I hate that kind of groove but I do.

It's very musical to my ear.
I think it's just a situation of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. There is a lot of stuff that folks on here rave about that does nothing for me...and that certainly doesn't mean it's not good. We all have different tastes and concepts of what's great.

I don't like the Doors to begin with and the bass line is pretty boring. But adding to the bass line seems to take away from the tune.
Lets face it, the driving open E defines the song |

| | | | FWIW, I always liked the 'Reggae'-ish feel of "Hotel California"...now "Lyin' Eyes"? The only thing worse than playing it is listening to it.
