Question I like it when the bass does...

... what ?

Thought I'd start a thread to see what you enjoy hearing most from a bass line.

When you're listening to a song, and you're tuned into the bass - what makes you smile when you hear it?

I love it when the bass refuses to join the rest of the band on some crazy riff action, and just keeps its phat beat pulsing.

I love it when the bass momentarily does join the rest of the band on some crazy riff action and you still don't miss the sense of the groove.

+1 or even the one surprising/unexpected note that turns everything around

We've all hit "that note" and you know what I mean

I love it when the bass can actually be clearly heard in the mix, rather than be pushed way down on the mud.

I like it when the bass itself sounds like an actual piece of music, a complete musical statement that can be taken separately AND as part of the larger whole. That's what I really dig .

I like it when the bass is played with confidence and musicianship and does exactly what it needs to do to suit the style and sound of the band it's supporting.

..Too vague?

I like it when the bassist plays a lot of off scale notes, as well as the guitar playing on scale notes, but in a semitone down from from what the bass is playing.

Okay so I'm weird.

I like it when the bass is doing an octave figure and throws in a really low note. E.g. instead of playing F1 F2 F1, you get a F1 F2 F0 and then the music goes on to whatever else.

I love how this thread has no recordings in the recordings section lol!

That said, I like it when a bass can funk on it own like here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU4ZFx3OS38
