I love recording live
I recorded my bands side of this split release all live aside from the vocals being done afterward. I love when bands do this so this was a treat...just pack a bunch of guys in a room and press record. Give it a listen and let me know what you think!
we are getting ready to do the same.
we go into the studio in 2 weeks and we're aiming to everything live. we have no vocals so we don't have that to consider.
we're a 3 piece (guitar, bass, drums).
post/math/prog - not too dissimilar to what you guys have going on.
any advice for a good live sound?
or anything you wish you did or didn't do?
I guess I would of liked to prevent some of the bleed in the overheads...there's actually a ton of guitar in there...almost more than drums. With live stuff I always use close mic'ing. Mics right on the grill or near the drum heads as possible. If I had enough inputs I would of loved a room mic and DIs of the guitar and bass.
Good luck with the recording! It's always a challenge to do it all live but very rewarding. We were in a really hot storage unit in the middle of summer with no AC so it was pretty much an oven.:eyebrow:
ha! sounds like a good time. you always remember the hard stuff.
thanks for the advice.
we're going to our friend's studio and are really pumped.
i think we will be able to have DI's along with the amps mic'd.
we know it will be a challenge, but we really want to capture the organic sound of us playing together. i guess i sort of miss the old days of tape - though certainly not the cost!
I'm totally digging your sound. if you have a chance check us out as well. our last recording is up on bandcamp as well as a live show. obviously the show is lower fidelity but I think the feel is nice and less antiseptic than the album (in terms of feel).
thanks again and good luck with all!
