I love just about all things Jaco, but not this.
He didn't lock in with the drummer IMHO. Maybe over medicated or perhaps some bad Chinese food.

I wasn't terribly impressed with it. I didn't feel much groove in it. And Jaco's bass tone is utterly wrong for reggae.

Maybe he was too drunk or something.

his tech ability is fantastic but to be honest if i played that in my band they'd throw me out before i finished i think it proof that even great muso's sometimes produce things that are far below their usual high standards

i'd still give my right leg to have 3% of his talent though

wow.. I'd recommend not listening to 'purple haze' from that link. its just awful.

I think if folks didn't know it was Jaco they'd consider the bassist horrible on those recordings. There are plenty of instances of folks playing way better who get flamed to high hell and back on TB.

just my $0.03.

+1

I was gonna ask if it was a fake. IMO, it kinda sounded more inline with what I expect out a late-teens garage band. But, my opinion ain't worth squat. Is there any chance that this is a fake?

If you're talking about the PH/Chicken Medley, did you bother to listen to the whole thing? It gets really cookin' there after the PH portion, I dug the hell out of it! With all things considered regarding the hardships he was going through during this time of his life, he could still lay down the funkin' groove.

I think it's okay, there's some misplaced fills here and there, but I think the groove's pretty kickin', and the solo's pretty tight, too. This seems sort of like some kind of jazzed-up reggae. I must say I had bigger problems with the guitarist's playing.

yeh, i have this recording. jaco was/is something to behold, but it takes a special kind of groover to play reggae...or caribbean music in general. space is the place!
but it's something i notice with a lot of bass players who try to play reggae, so o well...

This is from a bootleg recording with Hiram Bullock and Kenwood Denard.

The sound quality is horrible and the playing is loose by most standards. The version of Teen Town is the best I have ever heard though!!!!

Hmm... after not getting the page to load I just assumed it was from the same set that I posted above. Try the link I posted to find some tastier offerings.

true his tone and even style in general isnt very raggae, but its still some great bass playing. solo is a bit jazzed up for raggae too, but i like that personally, better than playing the blues scale to death like most players

Purple Haze sounded really, really, really bad. Really, listen to it and tell me you'll put it on your iPod rotation.

it didnt suck suck. but I think the fell may have been off cause it doesnt sound "dub" and the guitar gets grating. it sounds like dinner music. jazzed up ragga muffins lol.
