I think i've found my dream tone.....wow

As of late all I've been listening to is The Who: Live at Leeds, and I am curious as to what bass and amp setup John Entwhistle used, especially on the song Substitute. Also, I would like to know how I can achieve such incredible tone using modern equipment.

And as a side note, what other bass players use a tone such as John's? I know that Tim Commerford from RATM and Audioslave has great growly overdriven sound. What equipment does he use?

Thanks for all help!
