I WANT STANLEY [Clarke]!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been really getting into Stanley Clarke lately. I started off with School Days (obligatory,) and man that is one masterpiece of an album. Not a single bad song on it. I got Journey To Love because it has "Silly Putty." That CD's pretty decent, but I don't think i've listened to it enough to claim it a masterpiece. Where would I go from there? Should I get some Return to Forever?

And just because i've been wondering, in Victor Wooten Live @ Bass Day '98, what is the Return to Forever song they play, because that song is sweet!

Thanks guys!

Yes. I'd recommend starting with "Return to Forever" or "Light As a Feather". Those recordings are, imo, the best output from that band and from Stan Clarke, and it's some of my favorite music.

Oh boy.

Well, for the Return To Forever stuff, Romantic Warrior is the one for me. It features Stanley on fine form and is really an essential buy for any fusion fan.

From his solo career, his eponymous debut and "if this Bass could only talk" are also brilliant, particularly the latter. ITBCOT is a phenomenal record, probably one of my favourite jazz albums from the 80's!

Also, do not overlook Animal Logic. I have their debut album (gonna order the second one tonight) and it smokes. Very catchy tunes, great stuff from Stan.

Can you tell I'm a bit of a fan?

You could try the intro (with upright bass, i believe), to "Sometime Ago - La Fiesta", by Return To Forever. Stanley does some amazing baass lines in that intro.

In addition to what's been mentioned, I also consider the first "Rite Of Strings" album an essential one.

Return to forever, the romantic warrior.

Nearly the ultimate album if its your style of music.

The one con about that CD? I have to listen to the whole thing at once... cant do only one song, cant skip tracks.... damn great album.

If I have one gripe with Romantic Warrior it is that the songs are brilliantly composed and arranged. Sadly, there is no room for improvisation, which is a shame!

Oh yeah, I already have that. "Indigo" is amazing, and I like their version of "Renaissance" better than JLP's, and i'm a JLP fanboy.

Get Stanley Clarke's first album, "Stanley Clarke"- that's another that I believe doesn't have a bad song on it- although you may be put off by Stanley's not-so-great singing voice on "Yesterday Princess."

Oh, and the song of the Victor Wooten Bassday DVD is "Vulcan Worlds."

Hope this helped

Return to Forevers "Where Have I known you Before" had some great playing and some pretty good tunes. Stanley also does some serious grooving. I will not say it's their best CD, BUT, it's probably Stanley's best work with the band.

I think either Self titled or Journey to love go after School days. Song to John is my favorite song in the world ever!
