Ideal Bass Tone

I don't particularly like this song, but this bass tone to my ears is the Holy Grail. YMMV, right tool for the job, etc, but if I had to have one bass tone for the rest of my life, this would be it.

JAMES BROWN It's Too Funky In Here - YouTube

Post an example of your ideal bass tone.

Down - Lies, I don't know what they say but - YouTube

This just about does it for me. Smooth, warm and round to gritty and sustain-y.

Motion City soundtrack - Delirium

This tone + a little bit of grit would be bliss.

This is an amazing tone to me. He always fits in the mix so amazing and he is at the very top of the genre for bass players. I strive for this every day lol.

Grateful Dead

Trick Of The Light - The Who - YouTube This one's unfair, since Entwistle's using an 8 string, but it's completely ridiculous bass!

Dave Dinsmore's tone on the Album "Coping with the Urban Coyote" by Unida. So fat, punchy and growly. Close to my Holy Grail. Few Examples:

Unida - Thorn

Unida - You Wish

Also, Nick Oliveri's sound on "Blues for the Red Sun" by Kyuss. Especially love his tone on this song (Love the clean jam part at the end, starting at 3:02) :

Kyuss - 50 Million Year Trip

P-bass with new flats through a Fender tube amp, almost like a cross between Mel Schacher and John Wetton.

Don't know how he gets this Jazz tone, I just know that I want it.

it depends so much on context, witch is something i used to never "get." on some beatles tunes, mccartneys hofner is exactly what you need and fits perfectly. other times i really dig tal wilkenfelds sadowsky, or owen biddles 30" scale 6 string on the last roots album. (did i really just mention two 30" scale basses in this thread, while my bass is 35.5" scale?) richard bona's fretless sounds fantastic on lots of tracks too.

but if you switched the basses between any of these people it probably woulden't sound too good. yet i consider each of them perfect. as well as my own sound, witch is kind of different from each of the above. context - and everyone elses sound - is almost more important than your own gear and tone.

"Heartbreaker" by Led Zeppelin... I love his crunchy, distorted Leslie cabinet effected bass. Perfect.
