I'm confused- TWO versions of Running In The Family?

I'm really confused on this. I was digging around on YouTube and I found a live version of Running In The Family with completely different lyrics to the ones I know.

This alternate version starts with something like "I've got a scientific mind" and has another line about "my father won the Nobel Prize for history".

The video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjb7dg0v_V0
The version I know- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvcUcsYjoMU

Can someone please enlighten me? I know it says original lyrics but as far as I know I've never heard any recorded album version with these lyrics.

That was a cool video, thanks for sharing.

Of course, it wouldn't be the first time Level 42 have switched things up a bit. They are a band with a shedload of demo and unreleased material, just look at some of the gems that have turned up as extras on the re-released albums!

I mean, they've done this stuff a lot. Dune Tune is also known as "Rapido Blues" in some places due to the labelling of the track on some releases. Listen to "Sandstorm" from The Early Tapes release and then tell me that they didn't recycle the music, put some lyrics on it and call it a single known as Hot Water!

It's true - the lyrics you are less familiar with were the original ones that Boon wrote for the song. They are, IMO darker and a little bit disturbing compared to the ones that made it to the CD, and they were almost never used live. I think this has been discussed over on the Level 42 digest - I'll see if I can find any more complete info.

EDIT: Here are the search results from the old Level 42 Digest addressing this topic. Some are more relevant than others.

I posted to that digest for years - back in the mid 90s, when most of the hits on that search were posted, there was some interesting dialogue. Mostly because information abut the band was not nearly so available on the 'net then. In the last five or seven years, it's sort of degraded to the same few topics going round and round, plus the occasional flaming jihad troll thread. I stopped paying attention long ago.

My favorite memory of that digest - I was living in Dallas in 1996 and attended a GTG of L42 fans there. One guy had his girlfriend along, and she was not necessarily a fan. At a certain point, we ended up doing a sing-along of "It's Over" which, now that I think about it, was really, really geeky. This guy's girlfriend, though - she stood there looking like a bunch of space aliens had just walked out of a flying saucer and told her to take them to her leader. I have to believe that was their last date.

And if that wasn't enough to scare her off....

The sight of a bnuch of men gathered, wearing basses tucked into their armpits playing silly-fast slap lines would have done it!

As a Level 42 fan, I feel it is customary for me to post this picture of me doing the Mark King thing...

Oh yes!

Either you are a big guy or those Status bodies are smaller than I remember.
