Start out with a Line6 UX2 and get familiar with recording. I use thing for everything. Drums, bass, guitar, vocals, etc.

Less than 200 bucks and you have a quality starter interface. Get a Shure SM58 Beta for vocals and 2 SM57's for general use and MAYBE an overhead condenser. The best drum mic I have used for general purpose stuff is micing my room with one of the CHEAP MXL phantom powered condenser mic's then putting a 57 on the snare.
This doesn't count any mixers, software, stands, monitors (get a good set!) etc. AT LEAST 1000-1500 here alone.
I use Cubase for recording, Line 6 for modeling, and then Audition for mastering.

These are rough......lol.....I pulled everything down to remaster and just put this stuff up because I played with a friend on Sweet Child of Mine and I CAN'T play drums well and had to fill in for a drummer that flaked out.The only drawback is mine is track by track recording, I can't do multitrack well because I don't have the interface to do it.
Drums on Knockin' are courtesy of yours truly playing iPhone finger drums lol. I also attempt a lead and sing, but those are scratch vocals with half a head cold
