imac bass garageband help

What do i need and how do i record???
i have a bass, a combo amp, and imac, and cords/cabels shouldnt be a problem... but how do i get garageband to record my sound?

My search function isnt working at the moment so this is what ive tried and it may be really bad but its not working anyways.

1)plug bass into amp
2)plug cable from headphone jack (with an adapter) into line-in on the mac
3)record on garageband

All im getting is noise so its as if a mic is picking up the bass not the sound from the amp going into line in. i went into the settings on the mac and it was on "line-in" not "built in mic"
SO any suggestions or concerns?
