there is a time and place for everything. i like victor wooten, but mainly with the flecktones, the players are all at his level so everybody gets a say in the final music. same thing with alain caron, i thought he was better with uzeb than his solo stuff. i like watching these guys go off every now and again, it shows me how far people can go but at the end of the day if i wanna sit back and listen to something i listen to other music ( all that rapid fire stuff gets old fast ). two exceptions being jaco and jonas hellborg. i can listen to these two guys any time. jonas is probably the closest guy i've heard to jaco at being able to unite jaw dropping chops, with his own identity and play musically and rhythmically interesting music ... check out video from his paris dvd ( available on youtube ).

I just picked up their new Christmas CD, "Jingle All The Way". Very unique, very challenging, but beautiful. Edgar Meyer plays upright bass on a few tunes with them. The Flecktones were just at a local venue, but I missed it. They pretty much played the new CD, it was their version of a Christmas show. Rave reviews from everyone, a lot of folks said it was the best live show they've heard from that band. Victor is at his best when he's with them, it's as if every member of the band is an integral piece of the puzzle. Simply awesome, yet also very accessible. My wife loves their shows, and she's not generally into that style of music. They make it look so damn easy..... |

The music itself feels very natural and inviting, full of good vibes. But wow, what compositional breadth! |

(and the Ray Conniff Singers, but now I'm really dating myself....) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
