Independently Released My First Album (FREE!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

Last night I released my first album. It's rather abstract stuff, but heavily influenced by various industrial, jazz, and progressive groups. It's really been quite a trip. I started with a catalog of around 30 concepts; these were everything from riffs, sound scapes, to full compositions. Invited several musicians and other various artists to my small studio and we put this together over a period of 3 months. All together from original conception to release it was around 14 months. I hope you all take a minute to check out.

Sounds great! I listened to most of it yesterday and have listened once today. Tried to download it, but it starts and then stops after 3 or 4%.

What did you use to create the soundscapes?

Thanks man! We really appreciate anyone taking the time to lend an ear.

That's really weird about the download though. if you want, send me your email in a PM and I'll send it to you personally.

That's actually a really hard question to answer... It really depends on which track you're talking about. For example, the backdrop for 'New Man' was achieved with a pad on a Korg Triton rack unit and mangled in the Ableton Live. Then a single bass stab from a patch in Reason 4's Thor module was run through several delays. Samples from field recordings I made throughout the recording process were then layered on top of that. Acoustic bass, piano, and Virus were then layered. A track like that was very much composed in the computer.

On the other hand... The soundscape backdrop for KRH was actually achieved by throwing about five bucks in quarters into my dryer then recording that and applying massive amounts of reverb. Our engineer and I originally wanted to record the compressor on my refrigerator churning away, but once the mic was placed and the big red button was hit it shut off. After a phone call to the Maytag support line and some serious "***" responses by operators and repair people we decided to try something else. If you listen carefully you can also hear me dropping things into the inside of my piano (very carefully I might add).

It's kind of disgusting how much time we spent on the detail of some of this stuff...

Ok, it sounded like there were two creative sides attacking each other. Rarely did the industrial and jazz elements merge IMO. While both work on their own the parts didn't gel, as I heard it.

I liked it a lot. Creative, but still accessible. The music keeps you guessing because you're not sure where things are heading, but surprises definitely await. Nice musical interplay.

Thanks for the free download.

A few days ago, my English teacher asked us if there is a definitive point where something can or can not be considered art. In the case of music, I was the rebel, and said there absolutely is. Far different from a matter of opinion, music is noise and no longer music when it falls short of the vision of its composer or performer. You are clearly where you want to be with this album, and I actually love a lot of it.

It sounds conflicted, but it sounds oddly beautiful, especially the vibraphone-like sounds (They may well be vibes, it's hard to tell amidst some of the lush soundscapes you put together.)

Thanks for putting it up for free. I like it.
