Alright so I've only recently heard the song "I Want You Back" and I think the bassline is just great! And I know Jamerson did a view Jackson 5 songs, so I'm curious...
What are some of the greatest Jackson 5 basslines? I'd really like to look into their music for this reason.

In addition to playing some of my favorite bass lines ever, it's worth noting that he's primarily a sax player, and has been playing with the (Jazz) Crusaders for about four decades now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crusaders

| Like Jimmy said...they're all 'great' (even their Christmas album!).
Another favourite of mine is "Never Can Say Goodbye".
...not sure who played the bass part, it does have a Chuck Rainey vibe goin' on.

I don't think I listened to a Jackson 5 song since the Jackson 5 were a big deal in the early 70's and I honestly never had any inclination to. It wasn't too bad to learn the notes but I found the biggest deal was getting the feel right. I'm not exactly an R&B or funk kind of guy but my instructor keeps telling me he wants to turn me into one (Jim, I can hear you laughing hysterically at THAT thought! ) . I'm game.
Now that I'm listening with different ears than I did back then I think it would be a great learning experience to learn other Jackson 5 songs as well. Thanks for all the suggestions in this thread.

Thanks for all the suggestions in this thread. | I think this ia a great thing for all musicians to do. Delve into other musical styles and genres. This can only help one's musicial vocabulary! There are some great J5 basslines! |

You're not in Kansas, anymore.
BTW, always feel free to add any insights you have...after all, you're the one talking lessons here!

I mean the notes aren't too difficult, it's a lot of the same throughout, but getting that groovy feel, I haven't been able to yet...

since I'm taking a break from speedmetal for the moment, my biggest thing now is doing 60's and 70's cartoon and t.v. themesongs since noone else does them, and I'm trying to start a trend.
my list includes wonderwoman,speedracer,theJetsons,laverne+shirly/happyDays,greenAcres/the munsters, love american style, team america, spiderman, the electric company, with more added every week....
for "noodling", when your bored...some of these themesongs actually have very cool and catchy basslines.

We're doing that one soon. It's on our 'to learn' CD and the minute I heard it I had to learn it. Screw the fact that it's not on our 'active' list yet - that line is irresistible!

I've messed around with a few others but have never finished them. I gotta do something about that.

If I remember correctly, the song is in Ab (dom7?). It all stays in the major scale and just moves inside those notes. You are right, the feel is the most important thing. Once you get the feel, focus on the rest.
