Rodney "Skeet" Curtis (Parliament/Funkadelic) was talking about this bassline in the latest issue of Bass Player.

Every time I hear a Jamerson bassline that I haven't heard in some time it smacks me like a baseball bat...

Man, Carol Kaye sounds great on this!!!!

Seriously though, I love the consistency in every note of this man's playing. Must have been hell for road bassists back then who had to learn James' parts for tours.

Its not that he just that he played great bass lines and that he had such a warm earthy tone but the fact that he was coming up with so much of this stuff in an assembly line type of situation that blows my mind.

(pedro always in awe of JJ)

No doubt. The fact that this stuff is often first take, 'off the top of my head' type playing is just astounding.

If you head over to iTUNES or wherever you buy MP3s from and search for a CD called "Michael Jackson - The Stripped Mixes" yu'll find a remix of Darling Dear with no drums and you can really hear the bass loud and clear! Best 79 cents you'll spend this week!

If you are looking for the transcription its in the book "Standing in the Shadows of Motown".Gerald Veasley plays it.I've worked it out. It's a hard song to play.
I have never actually heard the original version.I need to get the CD.

Oops I just noticed the link to youtube and I'm listening to it.
The bassline is incredible but I don't know about the vocals.
Some songs age well but I don't know if this is one of them.
