It was typical Berlin lots of chops/note, but no feel and doesn't know when to stop. Jaco I can listen to him he plays what's needs at the moment and his roots in R&B come through in his groove. Jeff has amazing chops, but IMO that is it just a lot of notes. |

| | | | That video doesn't do Jaco justice, as he
was FAR from his best at the time. Anything Jaco
did in his prime far surpasses anything
Berlin has ever done IMO. |

| | | | Not only was Jaco WAY from his best, but Jeff was clearly in "blast away" mode, because he was standing next to Jaco. (Well, wouldn't anyone be?) I've heard him in more relaxed settings where he was extremely musical, and played solos that were, if anything, DEEPER than Jaco IN HIS PRIME. Jaco was the superior innovator and visionary, but Jeff is pretty great in his own right. (IMO!) |

I hear no proof and see no proof that this was Jaco and Jeff. |

I like Berlin a lot, but I would have enjoyed seeing fewer 16ths in the high register. Nothing bad to say about him, though.

That footage is interesting, but not great.

That footage is interesting, but not great. | I never could get a handle on why wrestler Roddy Piper was on there.

Berlin demonstrating technique over musicality to the expense of Jaco. Jaco clearly not on good form and taking the backseat. The video just smacks of Berlin saying 'oh! look at me everybody, look how fast I can play!'
Bland, boring and very unoriginal IMO. YAWN!

But no, it really is sad. Jaco, the ultimate showman, the unstoppable personality, is back in the shadows with a low-slung hat and his head down, laying down a groove; barely even nodding his head. Meanwhile, Berlin is just blazing on top of it, out front in the light, but he's not saying anything. He's just throwing notes everywhere. If I weren't at work listening I would have said "Dude, shut up for two seconds!" out loud.
Still some cool playing, and an interesting slice of life.
Peace

Quite sad, all things considered! |

Yeah, yeah - I know. Vague as hell, but I'll let you know what's up with it when it finally finishes downloading.
