Jaco shows his is the musician of the two and playing with a feel. It was typical Berlin lots of chops/note, but no feel and doesn't know when to stop. Jaco I can listen to him he plays what's needs at the moment and his roots in R&B come through in his groove. Jeff has amazing chops, but IMO that is it just a lot of notes.

That video doesn't do Jaco justice, as he
was FAR from his best at the time. Anything Jaco
did in his prime far surpasses anything
Berlin has ever done IMO.

Not only was Jaco WAY from his best, but Jeff was clearly in "blast away" mode, because he was standing next to Jaco. (Well, wouldn't anyone be?) I've heard him in more relaxed settings where he was extremely musical, and played solos that were, if anything, DEEPER than Jaco IN HIS PRIME. Jaco was the superior innovator and visionary, but Jeff is pretty great in his own right. (IMO!)

I thought Jeff sounded good, too bad the clip runs out before Jaco gets his chance to blow.

Ok,can anyone prove that this was really Jaco? I mean visually there was no image of Jaco but plenty of Jeff.Let's move onto the sound track and this could have been manipulted by any good sound engineer!

I hear no proof and see no proof that this was Jaco and Jeff.

The thumbs gave it away.

I like Berlin a lot, but I would have enjoyed seeing fewer 16ths in the high register. Nothing bad to say about him, though.

I just think it's pretty cool that we've got a video of them both on stage together!

True. If only we had footage of Jaco and Stanley playing together (there's a photo on Clarke's website).

I remember when Jeff put that on his instructional video a long time ago, I was bummed because I thought he shouldn't have done it. Jaco is way past his prime on a borrowed bass, when did Jaco ever have a bass with a pick-guard?

That footage is part of Jeff Berlin's REH (?) Instructional Video. It's more interesting than instructional, but still fun.

That footage is interesting, but not great.

I never could get a handle on why wrestler Roddy Piper was on there.

A very good example of how NOT to play musically together on stage. Berlin demonstrating technique over musicality to the expense of Jaco. Jaco clearly not on good form and taking the backseat. The video just smacks of Berlin saying 'oh! look at me everybody, look how fast I can play!'

Bland, boring and very unoriginal IMO. YAWN!

Man, since Jaco is a beloved icon, and Berlin is a bit of a controversial dude, I figured all the talk on this thread was at least a little bit "just talk". But no, it really is sad. Jaco, the ultimate showman, the unstoppable personality, is back in the shadows with a low-slung hat and his head down, laying down a groove; barely even nodding his head. Meanwhile, Berlin is just blazing on top of it, out front in the light, but he's not saying anything. He's just throwing notes everywhere. If I weren't at work listening I would have said "Dude, shut up for two seconds!" out loud.

Still some cool playing, and an interesting slice of life.

Peace

See, when I watch it, I hear Berlin coming out with all this neat phrases and sounding like a man with intent, whereas it sounds to me like Jaco is the one without anything to say.

Quite sad, all things considered!

I'm currently downloading, via torrent, a video of an old interview with Jaco in somebody's apartment somewhere. It's about an hour long and supposedly rather controversial.

Yeah, yeah - I know. Vague as hell, but I'll let you know what's up with it when it finally finishes downloading.
