During his tenure with Weather Report, Jaco was known to do bass versions of the Jimi hendrix tunes "Purple haze" and "Third Stone From The Sun". Do they appear on any "official" (i.e. non-bootleg) recording ?

Yup - just about every official recording of Slang - has a Hendrix part in it - like on Weather Report's 08.30 and Live and Unreleased, as well as Joni Mitchell's Live album!!

I've read in a few books about Jimi that he once sat in with Jaco when Jaco was a youngster playing in a Fort Lauderdale club. Dunno if its true, but it's certainly a nice story.

Live in NYC Vol. 4 has a medley with Purple Haze in it. I don't believe those (NYC series) are considered bootlegs.

I've read the same thing in a Jimi Hendrix book (can't remember the name of it) and I have wondered about the source. I noticed how tagged on the passage seemed - it is only a line or two. It would certainly make a nice story though! But according to Ingrid's Jaco Site, Jimi and Jaco never met.I mean, she ought to know...

There's a version of purple haze by Michael Manring on his Drastic measures album. It's pretty impressive.

They sure sound like bootlegs, though. Almost unlistenable.

This version got me interested in the Jaco version. Michael Manring must use a bass with a two octave neck on this one. This got me interested in how it could be played on a standard Fender jazz

Also, there is a Hendrix tribute CD called "Stone Free" and Metheny contributes a version of "Third Stone From The Sun" which uses sampled clips of Jaco playing it. I really like that track. It is a Synclavier homage to Jimi and Jaco all at once.

Or a three octave neck. Michael likes his high frequencies.

Those Live In NYC discs would be 'boots' if the family wasn't get a cut.
Neil Weiss(?) sat in the club with a cassette recorder(IIRC) to record Jaco's gigs.
Dean Bennetti(sp) did the same with thing with Bird.

During the few days when I hung around with Jaco at his house in August 1977, he played me a tape of his initial fooling around with his digital delay. Afterward, he said, "I'm the only bass player who could've played with Hendrix." I'm sure he was referring to the "space" sounds he was getting with the delay. I didn't seize the opportunity to ask him whether he'd ever met Hendrix, but thinking about it now, the chronology doesn't quite seem to line up. I think he would've been too young.
There was a similar story about Hendrix jamming with Eric Dolphy, and in that case I think Hendrix would've been a bit too young.
Fun to imagine, though...

I dunno, the book says Jaco was just a kid playing in a house band at some Fort Lauderdale club. Its not impossible. Several Hendrix books I've read mention it. But its not in the Milkowski 'Jaco' book, so I dunno really. Probably didn't happen.
