Picked it up in town this morning along with "I wanna play for you" by Stanley Clarke. I knew they were planning to release this record but I didn't know it was out, it must have just come out today I guess! Anyway, got my copy, and even though the production values aren't the best, it's an amazing record! Jaco and John are just an amazing team!

Fusion fans rejoice!

Are these the recordings from the Havana Jam or are they studio recordings?

Yeah, you get the Havana show and then the NY sessions. I personally prefer the live sessions, even though they sound a little rougher and rawer, they have this incredible passion and fire.

The version of Continuum from the live show might well be the best rendition I've ever heard!

Imho

Imho I don't hear them playing well together at all. It seems that McL and Pastorius stayed in their personas instead of playing together as musicians. This may rile some of you. I've heard these folks live play so well it was amazing. Yet here they seemed to have retreated to their corners resting on their names. If you listen to Continuum it as if Pastorius was playing it like this is the way it goes ignoring everyone else. For once in my life I heard Tony hit something late. John was noodling.

I would say it's like having a cast of great movie stars that then don't try to gel with each other. Previously unreleased. Yep because it sort of stinks.

I am a huge fan of all three of these guys. I have all of John's current work, the guitar orchestra kind of stuff. Outrageous.
Tony Williams...just Wow. He was playing with Miles when he was 16.
Jaco...nothing else to say. Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light. Whew.

Pickup Tony Williams Lifetime Emergency.
John, Tony and Larry Young tearing it up. (The 2nd album Turn It Up has Jack Bruce on it! Bombastic!) Tony's singing is weak but tolerable considering what's going on. We bassists can get a lot from listening to Larry Young's foot pedal work!
My point?
The playing serves the song.

Jack Bruce! A good enough reason for me to stay well away! I kid...

I knew it wasn't going to be perfect, and I knew they wern't going to gel like say, the Jonas Hellborg/Shawn lane/Jeff Sipe trio did, but for an off-the-cuff, cobbled together show, I think it's pretty darn good!

I know John originally hated what they had done and refused to allow it to be released, but as the liner notes state, when he went back and listened he found something he dug. As a massive John Mclaughlin fan, and indeed, a Pastorius fan too, I think it was well worth me picking up!

There's already a thread on this !! Do a search!

I bought it and played it once - some good bits, but overall not something I would listen to - as there are far better albums by all 3 out there...

Jaco sounds "out of his depth" - rersorts to cliches and is clearly lost in several places...

Tony Williams does sounds great though...

A friend copied it for me. I was a bit underwhelmed. Like chadds said, it seemed like 3 great players doing their thing, but never really playing together.
