Found this clip on youtube awhile back now... love it..
My question is, anyone know where I can find these mixdowns where I can just listen to the bass and vocals alone? I love it.... really do... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCrO3iVWZE8
On a related note (kinda)... I remember recording at a studio where the sound engineer somehow got hold of a bunch of old Queen tracks and it was just Freddie Mercury's voice without any backing instruments... insane... he could have gone multi-platinum on that alone. |

The deluxe edition of Paul Simon's Graceland has a bass/vocals version of "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes".
PDB. I've had that album for years so I picked that one track offa iTunes.

It has black tolex and I got the padded cover for $40. I always use the cover when I move it or put it in the car. The pad protects everything except the bottom so I'm careful where I sit it... I wish avatar put rubber feet on the bottom of their cabs. | Well, ok then...

You'll need to follow the instructions to get a password. Lots of great solo Jamerson and some others as well.

It was from a friend who had bought some used 24 track tape for a project, and to his surprise, the previous user had used the tape to transfer some Queen masters for a project.
So, he let our professor transfer the songs onto a hard drive, and we got to mix Queen songs in class. It was always more fun than mixing school done projects.
Needless to say, our professor closely guarded that hard drive.

| | | | Thank you so much for this you guys. I've been playing a lot of funk/R&b lately (R&b and funk bass bible shedding) and it all seems to complex with everything in there.. but when it's isolated I can really see it for what it is and it's giving me a much better idea of what was going through their heads.

Everybody pays lip service to Jamerson, but then I hear all these super hi fi bass sounds with glistening highs and sub-sonic lows. This is a tone that drives a recording. Mix engineers today spend so much time subtracting frequencies on all the instruments to make them all fit. On these Motown recordings, the players took care of that while tracking. There was grit and drive in the sound.

His playing is also out of this world. I don't think I have heard someone anchor a groove so intuitively without wasting any note. |

| +1000. Don't get me wrong, I like the tone of active basses or roundwounds (even when I play them) but if all there was was this good ole thump, I wouldn't complain. |

the other tracks on it are not as stripped down as that one, but it's still a great buy.
If you search torrents for multitrack masters you might find a few awesome surprises (including Jamerson, Queen, Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley)
